Sending messages with sender IDs

To send messages with sender IDs, you must be an originating telco approved as a participating telco.

Check if a sender ID is registered

If you are a participating originating telco (including certified telcos), you must check if a sender ID is registered before enabling a customer’s account to send messages that include the sender ID.

If the sender ID is not registered, you must disrupt the message. This means replacing the sender ID with the word ‘Unverified’. Messages with unregistered sender IDs will appear in a single ‘Unverified’ message thread on recipients’ mobile phones.

If the sender ID is registered, you must confirm that:

  • you have been authorised by the customer (the organisation which has registered the sender ID) to send messages using that sender ID
  • the person making the request to send the message is authorised by the customer.

Reporting

You must report quarterly to the ACMA on messages sent with registered sender IDs.

Fees to use the register

There may be fees in future for using the SMS Sender ID Register. Any fees will be subject to future arrangements and will be communicated before their implementation.
