Using mobile phone boosters and repeaters

Boosters are illegal but some repeaters can be used.

If you have poor reception, never use a mobile phone booster.

Mobile phone boosters are illegal because they can:

  • interfere with mobile networks signals (so someone calling 000 may not be able to get through)
  • weaken network performance for other people.

Penalties for breaching the rules are serious – fines of up to $330,000 and/or 2 years prison.

How to get the best reception

Talk to your telco about your reception issues. They can check if there are network issues that may be affecting your coverage.

Many telcos have products to improve your mobile network coverage, such as cellular mobile repeaters.

Mobile phone repeaters must be authorised by a telco to be legal to use.

Boosters and repeaters are not the same

Sometimes ‘cellular mobile repeater’ and ‘mobile phone booster’ are used interchangeably. However, they are different devices. Only use an authorised repeater – or you’ll break the law.
