Our News media in Australia series reports against the Media Diversity Measurement Framework. The Framework will provide a robust long-term evidence base to help inform government decision making in support of public interest journalism and media diversity in Australia. This work forms part of the government’s News Media Assistance Program.

More information

The report draws on data from the now discontinued Public Interest Journalism Initiative (PIJI) Australian News Data Project (2020–24) and from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. We thank PIJI for sharing their research and data with the ACMA to assist our measurement of media diversity in Australia.

Through this project, PIJI analysed sample news coverage for a geographic area over a month to determine the:

  • number of 'public interest journalism’ and ‘other’ articles, as a percentage of total news output
  • percentage of local content
  • percentage of original and syndicated content.

We have engaged a third party to continue research for this report. This research will be published with the News media in Australia: 2027 report.
