News media in Australia
The News media in Australia series reports against the Media Diversity Measurement Framework. The Framework provides a long term and transparent approach for examining news media diversity in Australia.
The series provides a robust evidence base for government and the public on levels of diversity in the production and distribution of news, news content and Australians’ exposure to news, across a range of platforms.
The series includes:
- biennial written reports
- annual updates to interactive data reports.
In May 2026, we published updated interactive data reports and ‘insights at a glance’ for most Framework indicators (links below).
In March 2025, we released our News media in Australia: 2025 report, drawing on a range of existing ACMA and external data.
This was the first report in the series, with the next report to be published in 2027.

Our data quality statement summarises data quality considerations for our reporting against the Framework.
Notes:
The News media in Australia: 2025 report was updated on 12 May 2025 to correct a statistical error on pages 4 and 106.
In May 2026, we corrected a data quality issue relating to ABC and SBS data in the indicator 1 (news outlet controllers) and indicator 3 (news outlets) interactive data reports. As a result, the number and composition of media brands and news outlets attributed to the ABC and SBS has changed since these data reports and our News media in Australia: 2025 report were first published in 2025.
