Choose your mobile service carefully

If you are choosing a new phone or switching telcos, you have a few things to consider.

The law protects you, but make sure you understand the contract before you sign.

Choose the right plan

The right plan will depend on how you want to use your phone and how much you want to pay.

You can obtain independent advice to help you find the right mobile plan for you. Please see the ACCC’s guide to choosing a mobile plan.

Check if the network covers your area

Most phone companies lease their service from one of Australia's 3 major network operators. These networks have different levels of coverage across Australia:

Check your phone or device will work on the telco’s network

If you want to use your existing phone with a new telco, contact the telco first to make sure that they will be able to give you a service using that device.

Telcos are not allowed to provide a service through a device that cannot support a call to Triple Zero. Check with the telco to make sure you can use that device on their network.

Select the features you need

Telcos have to give you information that helps you compare products and services.

The best source is the Critical Information Summary for each product. You’ll find these on telcos’ websites or you can contact them and ask for a copy.

Prepare to sign a contract

Make sure you understand your telecommunications contract before you agree to it. In most cases, you can't change your mind afterwards.
