Broadcasting complaint outcomes

If a complainant:

  • has been to the broadcaster and isn’t satisfied with their response, or
  • has not received a response within 60 days,

we assess the complaint. All the broadcasting industry codes provide the broadcasters with a chance to consider and resolve complaints before we get involved.

We also look at all complaints that allege a breach of licence conditions and standards.

Complaint assessments

We assess a complaint to decide if we need to open an investigation.

In the table below:

  • ‘no further action’ means we have assessed and decided that it is not in the public interest, having regard to the subject matter, to investigate further. For example, if we assess and decide that the content is unlikely to breach the rules.
  • ‘assigned administrative actions’ means we have asked a community broadcaster to take certain actions
  • ‘under investigation’ means we are conducting an investigation to consider the matter in more detail. It does not mean the ACMA has already decided the broadcaster has breached the rules
  • ‘investigation finalised’ means we have completed our investigation. We publish the outcomes of our investigations

We do not always publish details about complaints that include allegations of a breach of privacy or other personal information or other sensitive matters.

Other assessments

The ACMA may also assess and investigate broadcast matters on its own initiative, in the absence of a complaint. These are also included in the table below.
