How it works
The ACMA is required to maintain the SIP register under the Telecommunications Act 1997.
The SIP register must include:
- the name of each SIP
- the relevant service area/s of each SIP
- a copy of anticipatory notices given by a carrier (if applicable).
NBN Co
NBN Co is the default SIP for all areas where no other SIP is identified. NBN Co may also have infrastructure available in other service areas where it is not the SIP. Find out more about NBN Co’s service areas.
SIP service areas
SIPs need to give mapping information to the ACMA for each of their service areas. This information is stored at data.gov.au. Direct links to each SIP’s dataset can be found below.
You can also use the SIP map to search an address or suburb to see who the SIP is. The map combines individual SIP areas onto one display tool.
We regularly make changes to the SIP register. New SIPs are added as their networks become fully built and are able to connect services. Current SIPs may add new service areas or request to be removed as the SIP for certain areas. For example, they may sell their network in a particular area to another infrastructure provider.
While all areas in Australia have a SIP, there may also be other infrastructure providers in some of these areas. Like the SIP, these other providers can assist land developers to meet their telco infrastructure obligations or service providers to connect customers to broadband services.
Click on the hyperlink to access the SIP dataset on data.gov.au for each relevant service area. In data.gov.au, the SIP dataset can be downloaded and viewed on the NationalMap.

Anticipatory notices
Licensed carriers (other than NBN Co) can enter contracts to install infrastructure for project development areas. This may include real estate developments or building redevelopments.
When this happens, they must provide us with an anticipatory notice. The notices must specify:
- the project area
- the type of network infrastructure to be installed
- the likely date of completion.
These notices let retail service providers and customers know about new areas that will become provisional nominated service areas. They also identify the SIP for that area once the installation is complete.
Copies of anticipatory notices given to the ACMA will be included in the SIP register and are accessible via the hyperlink to data.gov.au.
For an anticipatory notice that covers multiple project areas:
- the ‘estimated completion date of installation’ will be blank – the estimated dates of completion for the projects will be identified in a spreadsheet on data.gov.au, accessible via the links below
- where all areas have been declared, the anticipatory notice will be moved to the 'Completed anticipatory notices' table below
- where only some of the project areas of an anticipatory notice have been declared, the anticipatory notice will remain in the 'anticipatory notices' table below. The declared areas will be identified in a spreadsheet on data.gov.au, accessible via the links below.
Completed anticipatory notices
Once a carrier installs infrastructure in its project development area, it must declare the area a provisional nominated service area. The carrier then becomes the SIP for that area.
Below is a table of completed anticipatory notices where the infrastructure has been installed and project areas have been declared.
Variations to SIP service areas
Sometimes SIPs need to make changes to their service areas. For instance, a SIP may need to change its service area boundary coordinates after it gives the ACMA an anticipatory notice. Only the minister can change a SIPs’ service area declaration.
Below is a table of SIP service area changes made by the minister.
