Our field operations team is responsible for tracing and resolving interference issues. There are millions of authorised radiocommunications devices in Australia, meaning problems can arise with interference.
We investigate complaints about interference to radiocommunications and broadcasting services. This may be related to licensed radiocommunications services, or broadcast services like TV and radio.
Our field ops staff respond to issues affecting emergency services like search and rescue, police, fire, aviation and medical operations. By swiftly tackling technical issues and coordinating with the relevant authorities, we help maintain public safety and fast emergency response times.
There are many ways that interference can happen, including:
- a failure of users to comply with licence conditions
- the use of non-standard devices
- faulty devices
- unusual atmospheric conditions.
Interference is often caused without the device operator realising they are causing a problem. Sometimes, however, it is deliberate and malicious. It may include the use of frequency jamming devices or rogue operators trying to disrupt a service. We can help identify and take action against these users.
Other jobs undertaken by ACMA field operations include:
- site audits/inspections
- telecommunications cabling inspections
- broadcast measurements
- electromagnetic energy measurements.
We run awareness and learning activities such as visiting communications providers or device suppliers at open days, and educate TV antenna installers.
We also perform interference protection and diagnosis at major sporting events.
