Join us to help improve our framework of band plans, RALIs and embargos used to plan spectrum and enable coexistence between different spectrum users
We continuously review our spectrum planning frameworks to support new technologies and the efficient management of spectrum.
This will be an opportunity for you to help us shape improvements to our frequency coordination arrangements. We will be discussing and seeking your feedback on the current state of the frequency coordination requirements, including ideas for possible improvements.
Who should attend?
Industry stakeholders with an interest in radiocommunications assignment and coordination processes are invited to participate in the tune-up to discuss current and emerging spectrum management issues. The insights gained from the tune-up will help us improve our spectrum planning framework.
Get involved: explore the topics you want to hear about
Tune-ups are informal to foster interaction and we welcome and encourage questions from the audience on the day.
If you have a particular question or comments on suggested topics to be covered at the tune-up, email them to us at freqplan@acma.gov.au.
Registration
To register to attend, email freqplan@acma.gov.au with your name, email address and organisation.
We will send details before the tune-up on how to join via MS Teams.
Please note: This industry tune-up is intended as a technical and regulatory discussion and therefore not open to media. Media enquiries can be sent to media@acma.gov.au.
Agenda: Wednesday 5 March |

10:30–10:35 am: welcome MS Teams attendees |
10:35 am: Spectrum tune-up opening (5 minutes) Welcome: Chris Worley, Executive Manager, Spectrum Planning and Engineering Branch – ACMA |
Session 1 (30 minutes, including question time) |
10:40–11:10 am: Overview of the current framework The spectrum planning framework is expressed through a combination of legislative instruments and administrative policy documents. This includes band plans, radiocommunications assignment and licensing instructions (RALIs) and spectrum embargoes. In this session, we explain the role of the spectrum planning framework and its interaction with the overall spectrum management system. We will also touch on the process for out-of-policy exemptions. |
Session 2 (30 minutes, including question time) |
11:15–11:45 am: Discussion on issues and ideas for improvement We’ll look at the ACMA’s ongoing program to review our frequency coordination requirements, discuss issues with the broader framework and examine suggestions for improvement. This session will provide an opportunity for the audience to provide feedback on our preliminary ideas for improvement, and to bring other issues with the framework to our attention. |
Session 3 (30 minutes, including question time) |
11:50 am–12:20 pm: Case study – Review of RALI FX3 RALI FX3 ‘Microwave Fixed Services Frequency Coordination’ has been a cornerstone of fixed point-to-point coordination for over 40 years. RALI FX3 describes procedures for the frequency coordination of terrestrial microwave fixed services and to specify key technical radiocommunication policy requirements. We’ll discuss the current structure and content of RALI FX3 and if it remains fit for purpose. We will also discuss specific issues including the need for wider channels, use of protection ratios and the use of minimum path lengths. |
12:25–12.30 pm: Wrap up |
Closing comments: Chris Worley |
