Trends and developments in telecommunications 2024–25

Our latest Trends and developments in telecommunications report explores changes in Australian telecommunications in 2024–25. It highlights developments in the supply and use of telecommunications.

The way Australians use communication services continues to change. As we do more activities online, we’ve become more reliant on both wired and wireless telecommunications.

Highlights:

  • Nearly all of us are online and doing so more often, with increased use of mobile phones, smart TVs and tablets to access the internet.
  • Several online activities, including telehealth consultations, showed a notable rebound after a period of post-pandemic decline.
  • Mobile network operators are continuing to roll out their 5G networks and are adding more 5G sites than new 4G sites, reflecting the maturity of their 4G networks.
  • Fibre is now the dominant fixed-line technology in the national broadband network.
  • Fixed wireless – a type of service that uses a modem that connects wirelessly to a nearby base station – continues to grow.
