The issue
The SMS Sender ID Register helps protect Australians from SMS and MMS scams that impersonate trusted businesses, organisations and government agencies. It does this by allowing legitimate entities to register the sender IDs they use in messages to Australian consumers.
We are proposing that, from the 2027–28 financial year, the ACMA’s ongoing operational costs of running the Register are recovered through an annual application fee for registering a sender ID.
We are seeking feedback on the proposed charging model and administration arrangements, including whether applicants or telcos should pay application fees to the ACMA, the duration of the registration period, and whether lower fees or exemptions should apply to some entities.
