Proposal to remake the Broadcasting Services (Class Licences) Determination 2017

The Broadcasting Services (Class Licences) Determination 2017 is due to sunset on 1 April 2027. The instrument determines class licences for:

• subscription radio broadcasting services
• subscription radio narrowcasting services
• subscription television narrowcasting services
• open narrowcasting radio services
• open narrowcasting television services.

Class licences form an important part of the licensing framework. They assist broadcasters by:

• removing the need to individually apply for permission, or to pay fees to provide certain broadcasting services
• allowing for efficient and standardised use and regulation of technology.

Our view is that the determination is operating effectively and efficiently. We have not proposed any additional conditions on any class licences.

We plan to remake the instrument before the sunset date.
