Outcome

We received 2 public submissions to this consultation. You can access these below.

The submissions did not reveal an active user base. We will allow the instrument to sunset.

Sunsetting of this instrument will not affect the use of 27 MHz citizen band radios.

Previous consultation: The issue

The Radiocommunications (27 MHz Handphone Stations) Class Licence 2015 (the class licence) is due to sunset on 1 October 2025.

We believe that other devices, such as mobile phones and citizen band radios, have superseded the use of 27 MHz handphone radios.

Before letting the class licence sunset, we want to know if 27 MHz handphone radios are still being used.

If this consultation does not reveal a significant active user base for these devices, we propose to let the class licence sunset. This would mean that 27 MHz handphone radios could no longer be used in Australia.

Please note: These devices operate on different frequencies to 27 MHz citizen band radios. Sunsetting of this class licence would not affect the use of 27 MHz citizen band radios.
