Clearer mobile coverage information: What’s changing under the new rules

Choosing a mobile provider should be simple. But if you’ve ever tried to work out whether a service will actually work where you live, especially if you’re in a regional or remote area, you’ll know it hasn’t always been clear.

That’s now changing. New ACMA rules are designed to make mobile coverage information easier to understand, more consistent across providers and simpler to compare.

What’s changing?

We have introduced mandatory rules for how mobile providers describe and display coverage information.

Under these rules, telcos must:

  • use the same coverage categories
  • explain coverage in clearer, plainer language
  • base coverage claims on a common set of modelling assumptions.

Coverage maps must also be presented in a more consistent way, so you can more easily compare different providers and see how services stack up.

Why this matters to you

Coverage information plays a big role in deciding which phone plan or provider is right for you. The new rules are designed to cut through confusion and help you make informed decisions before you sign up.

In practice, this means it should be easier to compare providers and understand what level of service you can realistically expect. If you live, work or travel in regional or remote areas, you should also start seeing clearer and more useful information to help you choose a service that meets your needs. For many people, this should lead to fewer surprises after switching services and more confidence that coverage claims match real‑world experience.

What to look for now

When you check a provider’s website or coverage map, you should start noticing:

  • clearer explanations of what different coverage levels actually mean
  • more realistic information about indoor, outdoor and in‑vehicle coverage
  • less use of technical language or overly optimistic claims.

Together, these changes are designed to make mobile coverage promises easier to understand and trust.
