ACMA social media terms of use

Our channels

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) uses social media to share content, such as news and educational material, and to engage with the public. Our official social media channels (‘our channels’) are:

Our channels are for our community to share their views and ask questions about the ACMA’s work.

By engaging with our channels (which includes posting, commenting or transmitting material on our channels), you agree to be bound by and comply with these ACMA social media terms of use (‘terms of use’). As these terms of use help us maintain a safe and constructive space for all users, we encourage users to familiarise themselves with them, particularly our community standards and disclaimer below.

Our terms of use apply in addition to the policies and conditions set by each social media platform and all applicable Australian laws.

Community standards

To ensure our channels remain safe, respectful and constructive, we ask that you:

  • Be respectful and civil when interacting with others.
  • Do not harass, threaten, abuse, bully or intimidate others.
  • Do not use offensive or obscene language.
  • Do not post defamatory statements, unproven allegations or misleading material.
  • Do not impersonate or falsely represent any other person.
  • Do not share disinformation, scams or fraudulent content.
  • Do not post party‑political content, promotions or material that may be perceived as political advocacy.
  • Do not post or use content that infringes copyright or intellectual property rights of others.
  • Do not share personal or sensitive information about individuals (including yourself), such as email addresses, physical addresses or phone numbers, on our channels.
  • Comply with all applicable Australian laws, including but not limited to criminal law and laws relating to defamation, discrimination, privacy and publication restrictions.

Users who breach these community standards may have their comments removed or be blocked from our channels. We may also report unlawful content or behaviour to social media platform operators or law enforcement authorities, or take other action, including legal action, if we consider it to be appropriate to do so.

How we moderate our channels

We moderate our channels to keep discussions constructive and safe. We do not provide individual notice before moderating or blocking but will act proportionately based on the content and behaviour.

We reserve the right to:

  • Hide or delete comments that breach our terms of use.
  • Remove or hide content that is defamatory, discriminatory, misleading, inappropriate or irrelevant to the post.
  • Block users who engage in repeated or serious breaches.

Monitoring and responding on our channels

We monitor and respond to comments during business hours (9 am – 5 pm AEST or AEDT, Mon – Fri, except public holidays). We will aim to respond to messages or questions received on posts or direct messages within 48 hours. While we may not reply to every comment, we read and consider all feedback.

Disclaimer

You acknowledge and agree to the following:

  • You access and use our channels at your own discretion and risk, and you will be solely responsible for any damage or loss whatsoever that results from such access or use.
  • Any information you provide on our channels will be treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary.
  • Any content posted by us on our channels is general in nature and must not be taken as advice relating to individual specific circumstances.
  • We do not endorse any content posted by users of our channels. While we may engage with users by acts such as ‘following’, ‘liking’ or ‘sharing’ content across our channels, such acts are not an endorsement of any user or content.
  • While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure inappropriate or inaccurate material on our channels is identified and moderated, we do not guarantee that all inappropriate or inaccurate material will be identified.
  • We disclaim all warranties, whether express or implied, and to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law will not be liable for any losses or damages arising from, or connected to, the publication of content, the failure to moderate content or the use of (or reliance on) content by a user of our channels.
  • We reserve the right to modify these terms of use at any time. You should review these terms of use each time you engage with our channels. If you continue to engage with our channels following any such modification, you will be considered to have accepted the modified terms of use.

Privacy

We may record any personal information submitted to our channels and use that information for the purpose of administering our channels, considering and addressing any comments made, where there is a breach or security incident, or where required by law. Users’ personal information will only be used consistent with the Privacy Act 1988. We will not make any further attempts to identify individuals, except where authorised or required by law.
