Spectrum tune-up: 3.6 GHz band auction system

Date and time: Tuesday 10 April 2018, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm

Venues: Broadcast from the ACMA Sydney office via videoconference to our Canberra and Melbourne offices. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend this tune-up in person at the ACMA Sydney office.

Background

The Minister for Communications, the Hon. Mitch Fifield, made three reallocation declarations on 5 March 2018. The declarations provide that the defined spectrum in the frequency band 3575–3700 MHz (3.6 GHz band) in metropolitan and regional Australia be reallocated by issue of spectrum licences.

The ACMA is now preparing to reallocate the spectrum licences in the 3.6 GHz band via a price-based allocation process (an auction) in accordance with section 60 of the Radiocommunications Act 1992.

Auction format for reallocating the 3.6 GHz band

The best format for any individual auction will depend on the characteristics of the products on offer. In the case of the 3.6 GHz band, the ACMA considers the two-stage Enhanced Simultaneous Multi-Round Ascending (ESMRA) auction format to be most suitable for this allocation.

This tune-up will provide information about the ESMRA format and its features to potential bidders of the 3.6 GHz auction. There will be opportunities for tune-up participants to provide feedback on the day.
