With the third anniversary of the Telecommunications Consumer Protections (TCP) Code 2012—we are pleased to report a strong level of compliance with advertising rules among telecommunications providers in Australia.
In a recent review of 27 advertisements from a broad range of providers, we found that 25 were compliant with the TCP Code rules. These rules ensure that all advertisements are clear, accurate and not misleading to consumers. They must also contain important information such as standard charges for text, calls and data as well as any important information on qualifications and conditions.
We have now opened inquiries into the other two advertisements.
Having clear and accurate advertising is important in assisting consumers make informed decisions about the telecommunications products they purchase. The TCP Code rules benefit both the industry and consumers alike. Appropriately informed consumers are much less likely to be dissatisfied with the service they purchase, therefore reducing the likelihood complaining to their provider or the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO).
We will continue to watch how industry advertises, recognising that informed consumer choices lead to increased consumer satisfaction and improved reputation for the telecommunications sector in Australia.
