Converged legislative frameworks

Overview

Converged legislative frameworks—international approaches is one in a series of occasional papers exploring current issues in regulation.

It examines the approaches of a number of international jurisdictions in the move to a converged legislative framework for media and communications. It provides an insight into the reform of telecommunications, broadcasting and radiocommunications regulatory frameworks through converged legislation, as experienced internationally. This paper provides information on the context of, and rationale for the move to converged legislative frameworks in various jurisdictions, and discusses the key features of converged legislative frameworks. It suggests that converged legislation demonstrates an evolutionary approach to regulating for convergence.

It aims to inform the ACMA's regulatory development activities, and to contribute to discussions about regulatory frameworks in Australia in a converged and digital media and communications environment.
