Offering or promoting credit to gamblers

It is illegal for gambling operators to provide credit to Australian-based customers or to help them access credit. If a betting company has offered you credit, complain to us.

Gambling operators must follow rules that have been set to protect the community.

They must not offer lines of credit to customers who are based in Australia or help them use third parties such as payday lenders.

As a customer, you can still use your own credit cards.

Exemptions

These rules do not apply to:

  • telephone betting services with a turnover of less than $30 million/year and an on-course presence
  • customers that are a gambling service provider. This exemption relates to business-to-business transactions such as bet backs

How to make a complaint

Make a complaint to us if you believe someone is breaking these rules. You can remain anonymous.

In 2018, the government introduced the ban on betting credit as part of the National Consumer Protection Framework to help gamblers.

Responsible gambling

If you or someone you know might have an online gambling problem, we recommend that you seek help through Gambling Help Online. If you choose to gamble online, always check that the provider is operating legally.
