VAST open access areas

Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) is a satellite-delivered service that provides commercial and national (ABC and SBS) broadcasting services. It is funded by the Australian Government to provide access to a suite of metropolitan-equivalent broadcasting services to people in remote areas and to viewers in terrestrial digital television 'black spots', who would not otherwise be able to receive digital television once analog services are switched off in their licence area. This service replaces the existing ‘Aurora’ service.

While anyone can access ABC and SBS services via VAST, the rules in a conditional access scheme apply to viewers wanting access to commercial television broadcasting services via VAST.

Viewers in open access areas are automatically eligible to receive commercial VAST services. Viewers in these open access areas will be eligible to access VAST automatically and will not need to wait for the eligibility window to open (now 6 months before switchover).

What are Open Access Areas?

‘Open access areas’ are areas identified by the Conditional Access Scheme (CAS) Administrator to be areas where viewers have inadequate analog terrestrial reception and are unlikely to be able to get adequate reception of all applicable digital commercial terrestrial broadcasting services after the end of the simulcast period.
