Spectrum: Why you need a licence

The radiofrequency spectrum is managed and regulated by the ACMA under the Radiocommunications Act. This sets out regulations, standards, enforcement and prices for spectrum use.

In most cases you will need a licence to operate your equipment. Radio frequency bands are in high demand in metropolitan areas and it may be difficult to get a particular radio frequency channel.

Devices—manufactured locally or imported—and operating under the class licence, must also comply with radiocommunications standards.
