Spectrum tune-up: Spectrum for 5G broadband in mmWave bands

20 July 2017

Date and time: Tuesday 5 September 2017, 9.30 am–1.00 pm

Venue: ACMA Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane offices

The most recent update to the ACMA’s Five year spectrum outlook (FYSO) invited comment on a number of issues surrounding mobile broadband use of bands above 24.25 GHz (referred to as mmWave bands). Submissions to the FYSO have fed into our ongoing work on this issue over the past year.

When considering bands for mobile broadband, the ACMA follows a set of strategies it previously developed through consultation with industry.

To further progress consideration of the mmWave bands, we will be conducting a spectrum tune-up on the issue, which will include speakers from both the ACMA and industry. Topics for discussion will include the emergence of terrestrial and satellite 5G services, as well as current and planned use(s) of mmWave bands by incumbent services. The tune-up will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to provide further views and feedback on the use of various mmWave bands that are under consideration for possible use by broadband services.

Given increasing interest both domestically and internationally, coupled with limited incumbency issues in mmWave bands, we are also considering using this event to assist in streamlining the early consideration of mmWave spectrum for 5G use. Specifically, we will use feedback obtained from the FYSO, and during this tune-up, as part of our initial investigation of possible bands, and to help inform a decision on whether to progress consideration of one or more mmWave bands to the preliminary re-planning phase of the ACMA’s mobile broadband strategy.

If a decision is made to progress one or more mmWave bands to this next phase, the ACMA will then work towards developing a consultation paper discussing possible options for the bands identified.

An agenda for the tune-up will be released shortly.
