Section 38C of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 - Commercial television broadcasting licences - services provided with the use of a satellite

In the transition to digital television, the government has stated its policy is to ensure all television viewers in Australia are able to receive digital television following analog switch off, and improve choice and quality of television services for people in remote and regional areas.

A key element of this strategy is the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service, which is a digital service delivered by satellite that will provide access to a suite of metropolitan-equivalent broadcasting services to people in remote areas and to viewers in terrestrial digital television 'black spots'.

Commercial television broadcasting services which form part of the VAST service are licensed under section 38C of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (the Act), as part of a customised regulatory framework for commercial television broadcasting services delivered by satellite.
