Existing VHF marine radio certificates still valid

Recreational boaters with a VHF marine radio certificate needn't worry when the new Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) starts in 2013-14.

Existing marine radio certificates will still be valid. AWQs will not replace existing marine certificates. They will be an extra, more appropriate certificate for recreational boaters who only travel within Australian waters. AWQs will be quick and easy to obtain through local marine rescue organisations and other registered marine training organisations.

The ACMA is to coordinate the development and implementation of the AWQ as a result of its review of VHF marine radio operator qualifications for recreational boaters.
