How to be happy with your apps

Thinking of downloading mobile applications—‘apps’—onto your smartphone or tablet for yourself or your family? Or perhaps you’re wondering how to tell the difference between free apps and those that cost or charge you for features? Are you worried about incurring excess mobile data usage charges?

Well, help is here! The ACMA has developed an online guide to help you understand everything ‘apps’.

The guide covers various issues you may face when downloading or using apps, including:

  • dealing with accidental or unauthorised purchases
  • recognising misleading and deceptive information
  • monitoring mobile data usage
  • protecting personal information
  • managing app use.

And we love our apps! An ACMA-commissioned survey shows that 9.4 million Australians aged 18 years and over downloaded apps in the six months period to May 2014—up from 8.9 million a year earlier.

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN), the peak body for consumers in the communications industry, has also recently released research into Australians’ use of apps. Mobile app consumer attitudes and experiences gives insights into how consumers are purchasing apps or paying for features within apps (in-apps purchases). It also explores consumer concerns about data privacy in the app ecosystem.
