Commercial Digital Television services switch on in Alice Springs and Mt Isa on 2 May

From 2 May 2011, television viewers in Alice Springs and Mt Isa will be able to receive the full suite of digital commercial television services using their existing TV antenna.

Terrestrial transmission of the two existing commercial digital television services, Imparja Television and Southern Cross Television, will begin in Alice Springs and Mt Isa from that date.

This coincides with the start of a third, digital-only commercial television broadcasting service in remote central and eastern Australia. This service will be provided by Central Digital Television Pty Ltd, a joint venture company formed by Imparja Television Pty Ltd and Regional Television Pty Ltd, the existing commercial television broadcasting licensees for these areas.

Between them the three new services will provide the full suite of digital services currently found only on the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service in Alice Springs and Mt Isa.

The three terrestrial digital services will initially be transmitted in Alice Springs and Mt Isa on the following channels:

Southern Cross Television

UHF 38

UHF 37

The further rollout of a remaining 26 simulcast terrestrial digital services across remote central and eastern Australia will be in accordance with implementation plans to be submitted by the broadcasters and approved by the ACMA.

The second of May is the date set down by the Australian Communications and Media Authority for terrestrial commercial television broadcasting licensees to start transmitting their analog service in standard definition digital mode in each of the television licence areas of Remote Central & Eastern Australia TV2 and Mt Isa TV1.
