Search for broadcasters by postcode help

Postcodes

This application relies on postcode boundaries included in the Census data prepared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 Censuses.

The ABS postcode boundaries don't always perfectly match Australia Post's delivery areas, which can occasionally lead to misleading results.

Postcodes entering use from January 2006 are not included in the Census data, and will not be found. Postcodes whose delivery areas have changed since December 2005 may also not return the expected results. If your postcode changed after December 2005, you should try the old postcode for your location.

Australia Post also uses postcodes for special delivery arrangements, such as private boxes at larger Post Offices. Because these postcodes aren't associated with a delivery area, they are not included in the ABS data and will not be found.

Place names

The place names available for selection in the place name search facility are the names of urban centres and localities defined by the ABS for the 2006 Census. As such, they are not a complete representation of place names as would be available in a gazetteer. In particular, the names of suburbs are not included.

Definitions

  • Licence area name - The name of the geographic area specified by ACMA that each broadcaster is licensed to serve - see Licence areas overview for more information about licence areas.
  • Callsign - The transmission identifier allocated by ACMA to each licensed broadcaster in Australia.
  • On air ID - How each broadcaster identifies their transmission, if they choose not to use the callsign to identify their transmission - see the example below.

On air identification

If you can't find what you are looking for then chances are you are looking for the broadcaster's on air ID. The on air ID is different to the broadcaster's callsign. For example, the frequency 96.9 in Sydney has the callsign '2SYD' but the on air ID is actually 'NOVA FM'. To help you out, you can download a list of callsigns against on air IDs below.

Contacting the broadcaster

If you need to contact the broadcaster for further information, ACMA maintains a contact list for Radio & TV stations licensed to broadcast in your area.

Narrowcasting

The broadcasters search facility currently does not support searching of narrowcasting services in Australia, however you can download a list of narrowcasting services.
