It is now easier than ever to report spam email and SMS messages you receive. You can do this quickly and easily in two ways:
-
For SMS, forward the message to the Spam SMS service on 0429 999 888
(You will be billed the standard rate charged by your mobile phone provider for sending an SMS message)
-
For email, forward the message to the Spam Intelligence Database at report@submit.spam.acma.gov.au
Important note:
When forwarding an email message, please do not change the subject line of the message or add additional text. The ACMA will only contact you in relation to a report if it requires further information to assist it in its anti-spam activities.
How do spam reports assist the ACMA?
Spam reports assist the ACMA in its anti-spam activities. This includes taking enforcement action, such as formal warnings, infringement notices, enforceable undertakings and Federal Court action.
By reporting spam to the ACMA, you can help the ACMA to warn other consumers about spam-based scams that target Australians. Thanks to reports from the public, the ACMA were able to warn consumers about an SMS lottery scam targeting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and scammers using email to target the Queensland Flood Relief Appeal.

Q: How can I stop receiving spam in my email inbox?
A: Spam is a global problem with billions of messages sent every day. Your internet service provider may be able to offer you some protection from spam targeting you. Speak to your ISP about what they are doing to stop you from receiving spam.
You can also purchase your own spam-filtering software and we suggest speaking to your computer support person about software recommendations.
When it comes to spam, remember to ignore it, report it and delete it.
Q: How can I stop receiving spam on my mobile phone?
A: The ACMA has seen a significant increase in spam sent to mobile phones, particular scams targeting advertisers of cars, boats and bikes for sale and lottery scams. Be sure to protect your mobile telephone number, especially if it will be published online.
Q: Is it ever safe to unsubscribe?
A: If you know the business that is sending you email or SMS using the unsubscribe facility can be the fastest way to stop receiving the messages. However, if you are not sure who the sender is or suspect the message may be a scam, it is best not respond.
