Local content requirements are in effect for all regional commercial television licensees broadcasting in the licence areas of Regional Queensland, Northern New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Regional Victoria and Tasmania. Local content requirements were extended to Tasmania from 1 January 2008. Regional commercial television broadcasters affected by the local content conditions include:
- Regional Queensland - Seven Queensland, Southern Cross and WIN TV
- Northern New South Wales - NBN Ltd, Prime Television and Southern Cross
- Southern New South Wales - Prime Television, Southern Cross and WIN TV
- Regional Victoria - Prime Television, Southern Cross and WIN TV
- Tasmania - Southern Cross, WIN and Tasmanian Digital Television.
The local content licence condition has divided the licence areas in Regional Queensland, Northern New South Wales, Southern New South Wales and Regional Victoria into a number of local areas, reflecting the different sub-markets within those areas.
For the purposes of local content requirements, Tasmania is considered one local area. This is seen to be consistent with industry practice where Tasmanian news has in recent years been broadcast across Tasmania as a whole, rather than dividing it into Northern and Southern markets.
Licensees have advised ACMA of the local areas they have selected for the purpose of their compliance with the local content licence condition. The local areas served by the relevant licensees for the purposes of compliance with the local content licence condition are shown in the tables below. Licensees may broadcast services to other local areas but are not required to meet minimum levels of local content in any areas other than those shown below.
