Broadcaster ownership and control

The ownership and control rules in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (the Act) regulate concentration of control within broadcasting licence areas control and across different media. The ownership and control rules apply to commercial television and radio broadcasting licences, datacasting transmitter licences, and newspapers.

The primary objective of the Act relating to the ownership and control rules is to encourage diversity in the control of the more influential broadcasting services.

The ownership and control rules regulate for diversity of control to promote diversity of views. The ownership and control rules aim for a diversity of controllers both within individual markets and across different media sectors.

The ownership and control rules are based on the concept of ‘control'.
