27 GHz spectrum auction closes

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) today announced the successful completion of the 27 GHz spectrum auction.

The successful applicants in the one-day auction were Agility Networks Pty Ltd and Shin Satellite Public Company Ltd.

ACA Chairman, Tony Shaw, said he was pleased with the result of the auction which would deliver a range of new services to consumers, particularly the business community.

"This result will mean greater choice in the fixed wireless market and it is particularly pleasing to see that the spectrum is in demand in regional areas of Australia," Tony Shaw said.

Of the 126 lots on offer, Agility Networks won 500 MHz of spectrum in all areas and Shin Satellite won 150 MHz of spectrum in Regional WA and Regional SA.

The allocation of spectrum in the 27 GHz band follows the auction of similar spectrum in the 28 GHz and 31 GHz bands in February 1999. This auction raised $66.3 million.

The 27 GHz spectrum is suitable for broadband wireless services including high-speed data applications such as the Internet and a range of multimedia services.
