Broadcasting licensing

The ACMA's role in broadcast licensing includes:

  • the planning of broadcasting service bands
  • the allocation, renewal, suspension and cancellation of broadcasting licences

With the growth in digital radio and television transmission, the ACMA’s responsibilities also include planning and implementing digital television and radio services, and monitoring the digital broadcasting industry.

Lists of licensed television and radio broadcasters are available on this site, while details of ABC and SBS services are available on their websites.

In performing its functions, the ACMA aims to increase the diversity of broadcasting services, and provide audiences with better access to those services. The ACMA is also responsibile for the administration of media ownership laws; assessing control of commercial broadcasting services, and issuing directions to remedy any breach of ownership and control rules.
