Radio equipment licensing

If you wish to operate a radio device in Australia, the device must be authorised to operate by a radiocommunications licence.

Your radio device may suffer or cause interference if it is unlicensed, and operating an unlicensed device is an offence - a device may be confiscated under some circumstances.

There are three types of radiocommunications licence:

  1. Class Licence
  2. Apparatus Licence
  3. Spectrum Licence

A class licence allows everyone to operate certain types of radiocommunications devices, provided the device is operated according to the conditions of the licence. You may find that your device is already authorised to operate by one of the ACMA's class licences.

If none of the class licences are suitable for your device, you may require an apparatus licence. Upon application to the ACMA, an apparatus licence may be issued to authorise operation of radiocommunications device.

Alternatively, you may wish to approach a spectrum licensee to arrange to operate under their spectrum licence.

Visiting amateur radio operators

Amateur radio operators visiting Australia must obtain an appropriate Australian Amateur licence from the ACMA before they operate an Amateur radio device.
