If you are planning a trip to remote areas of Australia, the ACMA recommends that you have a reliable means of emergency communication.
Before heading off, travellers should:
- have a basic understanding of radio propagation, or how radio energy travels in space, to get the best performance from radio equipment carried in off-road vehicles
- consider carrying a distress beacon
- consider using the Citizen Band Radio Service (CBRS), which is a two-way, short distance, voice communications service that can be used by any person in Australia.
The ACMA also lists recommended operating practices for users of high frequency (HF) radiocommunications.
