13, 1300, 1800 calls and numbers

The cost of making calls to numbers beginning with 13 and 1300 is often different from the cost of a local call.

The cost of a local call depends on:

  1. the telephone company that provides your fixed telephone service

  2. the local/long distance call plan you have joined

The cost of a 13 or 1300 call from a fixed telephone service is determined by your telephone company and the contract/plan you have.

Local rate (13/1300) numbers:

  1. provide a central contact point

  2. make it easier for organisations to manage customer queries

  3. make it cheaper for consumers to contact organisations

  4. are not timed or based on distance

Long distance calls made to 13/1300 telephone numbers are charged at a low fixed rate regardless of the length of the call.

Calls made from a mobile may be charged at a timed rate. Calls to 190x numbers are charged at a premium rate.

Charges for calls to 13/1300 numbers do not have to be the same as local calls charges. If you have any queries regarding calls to these numbers, check with your telephone company.

What is the cost of a 1800 call?

Calls to 1800 numbers from a standard telephone are free.

Calls made from a mobile may be charged at a timed rate.

Can I get a 13/1300 or 1800 number for my business?

1300/13 and 1800 numbers are provided to businesses by many phone companies.

A fee may be charged for providing you with one of these numbers and any other associated services.

What's the difference between 1800 and 1300/13 numbers for my business?

  1. 1800 numbers - are paid by the business owner of the number

  2. 1300/13 numbers – cost are shared by the caller and the business

These numbers are a good way to attract business from anywhere in Australia. However, if calls come from outside your local call area you may be charged at long distance rates.

To minimise costs, only market your 13/1300 or 1800 number in areas you provide services.
