Environmental notifications

The Telecommunications Code of Practice 1997 requires carriers to notify environmental bodies of proposed activities:
  1. If a proposed land entry activity by a carrier is likely to be undertaken in, or have an effect on, any of the areas in the Register of the National Estate and Interim List for the Register, for which the Heritage Chairperson is responsible, the carrier must notify the Chairperson in writing at least 10 business days before starting activity.

  2. If a proposed land entry activity of a carrier is likely to be undertaken in, or have an effect on, any of the areas for which the Nature Conservation Director is responsible, the carrier must notify the Director in writing at least 10 business days before starting activity.

  3. Before engaging in a land entry activity, a carrier must take all reasonable steps to find out whether such activity entails a requirement to notify the Environment Secretary. If there is such a requirement, a carrier must notify the Environment Secretary in writing at least 10 business days before starting activity.

Such notifications is required if the activity might cause significant environmental damage. The Telecommunications Code of Practice 1997 Part 4, Section 2.17 contains a comprehensive description of circumstances requiring notification.
