Deeds of agreement
While it is the ACMA's preference to no longer enter into Deeds of Agreement, section 299 of the Radiocommunications Act 1992 (the Act) and section 12 of the Australian Communications and Media Authority Act 2005 allows the ACMA to enter into a Deed of Agreement with the operator of a satellite network or similar space system to control coordination and radio interference management of the network.
Deeds of Agreement are intended to provide certainty to the ACMA and to satellite operators by establishing:
- a framework that sets out how the ACMA and an operator will meet Australia's obligations to the international community in relation to a satellite network
- a mechanism that allows the ACMA to allocate responsibility for specific satellite networks to a particular satellite operator.
Satellite systems operating under existing Deeds of Agreement will not be subject to the new procedures for the coordination and notification of satellite systems unless otherwise agreed to in writing between the ACMA and the satellite operator.
