The future evolution of digital terrestrial television in Australia

23 January 2012

With the majority of Australians now enjoying the benefits of digital free to air television, the ACMA is starting a discussion with industry and the community on the future technical evolution of digital television in Australia.

The ACMA’s discussion paper, Beyond Switchover: The future technical evolution of digital terrestrial television in Australia, is the first step in this process. The paper seeks industry and community comment on the technological evolution of terrestrial digital television once Australia has fully completed the conversion to digital television.

The ACMA believes it is timely to look to the future and consider whether there is a role for the organisation to promote the progression to new digital television technologies over the next decade and beyond. The ACMA is seeking input on the drivers for change, the paths for implementing change and any steps it can take in the short to medium term that will assist change to new technologies for digital television in the longer term.

The ACMA will continue its work in Australia’s transition to digital television. The ACMA expects no significant change in the current technologies before the switchover process is completed by the end of 2014.
