We thought we’d use our first blog to go back to basics and remind you of the importance of washing—your marketing lists, that is.

What do you mean ‘washing’?

If you want to use telemarketing or fax marketing to sell your products or services to new customers, you need to ‘wash’ your list of numbers against the Do Not Call Register. This is the best way to check that you’re not using numbers that are registered and can’t be contacted for most marketing purposes.

So, whether your business is big or small, you use a call centre or your home phone, or you plan on making one call or 100,000—you need to wash. And you need to do it at least every 30 days.

Is washing difficult?

Doing the washing is easy! Just follow these steps:

  • go to www.donotcall.gov.au

  • create an account

  • select a subscription type that suits you (the lowest level is free)

  • choose the right washing channel (there are four different channels to pick from)

  • check out the FAQs for more info

  • wash regularly (at least every 30 days).

But why do I have to wash at all?

Washing your list means you won’t call people who don’t want your product or service—or at least don’t want to hear about it by phone or fax. You should think of it as a cost-effective way to save time and money—by only contacting people who are actually potential customers. Plus, you should wash your list because it’s the law.

Washing your lists regularly means you’re well on the way to taking the right line and becoming a better telemarketer.
